Outdoor activities like skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling, attract thousands of visitors to Clarenville every winter. People come for deep snow, and weather that is usually better than conditions seen on the Avalon Peninsula. It’s not all about snow though. Centred around White Hills Resort, the town of Clarenville is Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador’s capital of snow and adventure.
White Hills offers 40km of the best groomed Nordic trails in Eastern Newfoundland. All trails and loops are marked and interconnected. A feature is the 3.5km Harry’s Loop around Dark Hole Pond, which is lit for night skiing. Please purchase a trail pass from White Hills Resort or the Clarenville Nordic Ski Club before hitting the trails.
A number of volunteer organizations develop and maintain the vast network of snowmobile, ATV, biking, and hiking trails in the Clarenville area. Trail connections access routes towards the Bonavista Peninsula as well as destinations along the provincial T’Railway.
White Hills Resort is close to the Trans-Canada Snowmobile Trail and connected to hundreds of kilometres of groomed and marked winter trails. Snowmobilers are welcome to warm up and grab lunch in the resort Day Lodge between Wednesday and Sunday in the winter season.
Clarenville is right in the heart of a culturally rich and vibrant region, and a perfect launching pad for excursions to historic communities such as Bonavista and Trinity. Each year the Clarenville community hosts a variety of concerts, festivals, craft fairs and talent shows, including the ever-popular Arts Under The Stars.
This non-profit seasonal market offers local produce, flowers, prepared foods, and handcrafted items. The market hosts a wide range of family and nutritional programs, live entertainment, master gardener consultations, youth activities, and food demonstrations.
The Rotary Trail is unique as urban trails go. Nature lovers have a rare opportunity to view wildlife in its natural environment all along the trail despite being so close to human habitation.
The Wellness Trail has no designated beginning or end. You can start at the High School or the Town Hall, or even use it as a bridge between the Rotary Trail and the Bare Mountain Trail.
A three-kilometre loop through lush forests punctuated by rocky out crops. The route follows contour lines wherever it can to make the ascent as easy as possible. The steeper parts have stairs while the rest stops offer impressive views.
This trail boasts two viewing decks overlooking Random Sound. Picnic tables, benches, flower boxes and hanging baskets have been placed along the loop.
Courses at Port Blandford, Hatchet Cove and on the Bonavista Peninsula are a short drive from Clarenville.
